Spoken Sounds

At this point in the class I started working with Keaton. This allowed us to mix my sounds and visuals with his midi board with its real time sound editing capabilities. I collected the wavelengths of spoken letterforms to compare with the dropped letters.

Typographic Experiment with people

This week I created sentences using my wavelengths. The goal was for my subjects to try to decode the sayings after they had been given what the letter A looked like in my wavelengths. It proved impossible.

AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

I LIVE ON A LONELY ISLAND IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

My second test was to give my subjects the wavelength for the letterform C and ask them if they could guess the dropped letterform that they thought would create a wavelength of these qualities. Only two of the participants guessed C, while a majority thought the peaks related points on the letter.

Expanded letterforms

After looking at the collection of sounds I recorded for each letterform, I started to take note of the generalities that occurred within each letter group. The generalities usually occurred in the peaks and patterns of the wave lengths. Using these generalities I picked out best fit wavelengths to stand for the group.
